From Bluebirds to Backyard Habitats
Built For Bluebirds started in my woodworking shop in Norfolk, Massachusetts, with a simple idea: build a better home for the bluebirds in my own backyard. After seeing the results firsthand, I began building houses for others, and the response was greater than I ever expected. Customers soon began asking if I could build homes for owls, bats, and other backyard wildlife. Those requests helped turn a passion for woodworking and bluebirds into something much bigger—a growing collection of handcrafted products designed to bring more wildlife into our backyards.

I’m Jim Schmidt, the sole craftsman behind Built for Bluebirds. With a degree in Industrial Arts Education and a lifetime of experience in woodworking, I’ve dedicated myself to creating handcrafted birdhouses that provide safe and durable homes for Eastern Bluebirds. My background in woodworking began in high school and carried through college, where I honed skills in metalworking, graphic arts, and, most importantly, woodcraft. Today, I combine that expertise with my passion for nature to design and build products that are both functional and beautiful.
Every birdhouse I make is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, using premium materials and expert techniques to ensure each one meets the highest standards. I pride myself on creating designs that follow recommendations from trusted organizations like the National Bluebird Society, offering homes that truly benefit bluebirds. As someone who values precision and durability, I personally construct each birdhouse to last a lifetime, helping my customers invite nature into their yards while supporting the conservation of these remarkable birds.
